Air Canada Vacations: Wonders of China: A Journey Through Ancient Traditions and Modern Marvels
There are some destinations that stay with you long after you return home — and for me, China was absolutely one of them. It surpassed all of my expectations and it is a pleasure to share my perspective with you.
Thank you to Air Canada Vacations for hosting Wind Waves and Wands Vacations!

From standing atop the breathtaking Great Wall of China to watching ultra-modern bullet trains glide through vibrant cities, I quickly realized that China is a destination unlike anywhere else in the world. It is a beautiful blend of ancient traditions, modern innovation, stunning scenery, and deeply rooted culture.
One itinerary that truly captures the magic of this incredible country is the “Wonders of China” tour — a thoughtfully designed journey that combines history, culture, scenic beauty, and modern city experiences into one unforgettable adventure.
For most travellers, the Wonders of China itinerary typically spans approximately 12 days and 10 nights, allowing guests to comfortably experience several of China’s most iconic destinations while enjoying the ease and convenience of guided touring. Our own journey was a little more condensed, which certainly made for a faster-paced adventure, but it also allowed us to fully appreciate just how much beauty, history, culture, and diversity China has to offer in such a short period of time.
Beijing — Ancient Wonders Come to Life
Beijing was one of the destinations that fascinated me the most. Seeing the Forbidden City in person was truly surreal. The scale, history, and beauty of this former imperial palace complex are difficult to fully appreciate until you walk through it yourself.
Of course, no visit to Beijing would feel complete without experiencing the legendary Great Wall of China. Standing there and looking out across the mountains was one of those unforgettable travel moments that simply takes your breath away.

One of the unexpected highlights of the trip was accidentally becoming minor celebrities while we were there! Not only did several locals ask to pose for photos with us, but while filming one of our travel videos, we somehow ended up being recorded by bystanders… and apparently found our way onto Chinese TikTok! We’re still laughing about our brief moment of international fame — clearly we were living our best influencer lives without even realizing it.
Xi’an — History Beyond Imagination
Xi’an offers an entirely different perspective on China’s remarkable history. Visiting the famous Terracotta Army was something I had looked forward to for years, and it absolutely exceeded expectations. Seeing thousands of life-sized warriors carefully standing guard after more than 2,000 years is difficult to put into words.

I also loved the atmosphere of Xi’an itself — a beautiful combination of ancient culture, local markets, and modern life.
Suzhou — Charming Water Towns and Classical Gardens
Suzhou offered a softer and more traditional side of China that I truly enjoyed experiencing. Wandering through the canals and classical gardens felt incredibly peaceful and picturesque. The attention to detail in the gardens and architecture was absolutely stunning!

The slower pace here created such a beautiful contrast to some of the larger cities on the itinerary.
Known as the “Venice of the East,” Suzhou felt like stepping into a painting, with its winding canals, elegant stone bridges, traditional gardens, and slower pace offering a peaceful contrast to China’s bustling modern cities.

Shanghai — The Energy of Modern China
Shanghai was an incredible finale to the journey. The city feels vibrant, sophisticated, and endlessly energetic. I loved walking along the Bund and taking in the contrast between the historic waterfront architecture and the futuristic skyline towering across the river. For anyone who enjoys shopping, dining, nightlife, or modern city experiences, Shanghai delivers all of it in spectacular fashion.
Some of My Favourite Parts: China’s High-Speed Rail, Gardens and the Food! One of the most impressive parts of travelling through China was experiencing the country’s famous high-speed rail system. The trains were fast, efficient, comfortable, and incredibly modern. It added another exciting layer to the journey and made travelling between destinations smooth and enjoyable.

The incredible variety of cuisine throughout our journey was truly amazing. Every region offered something completely different, from traditional local specialties to beautifully prepared modern dishes, making the trip just as memorable for our taste buds as it was for the sightseeing. One of the things we loved most was discovering how diverse the food culture is across China — each destination brought new flavours, cooking styles, and dining experiences to enjoy.

One of the things that surprised us most was the abundance of beautiful green spaces woven throughout the cities. Those who know me well can certainly attest to the fact that I was completely inspired and awe-struck by the incredible flowers and beautiful floral displays we encountered throughout our journey. From carefully landscaped gardens to colourful blooms woven throughout the cities and scenic areas, the beauty and attention to detail added such a warm and peaceful feeling to the entire experience. Of course, it probably also helped that we had just escaped the cold, grey Canadian weather — after months of winter, I was apparently ready to emotionally connect with every flower we passed! .
Despite visiting several large and bustling urban centres in China, we were continually impressed by the peaceful parks, gardens, tree-lined pathways, and scenic waterfront areas that created such a calming balance alongside the modern city skylines.
Why I Think This Tour Works So Well
What makes the Wonders of China itinerary so special is the balance it offers. Travellers experience: Ancient imperial history Bucket-list landmarks Scenic cultural regions Peaceful gardens and water towns Modern global cities Efficient transportation A wonderful mix of guided experiences and cultural immersion
It never felt repetitive because each destination brought something completely different to the experience.
One of the things that truly enhanced our experience was the wonderful local guides we met throughout the journey. They were incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, and genuinely kind, always eager to share the history, culture, and stories behind each destination. Their warmth, patience, and passion for their country added such a personal touch to the trip and made the experience feel even more meaningful and welcoming.
A very special shout out goes to our guide, Fei, whose incredible knowledge, warmth, and genuine enthusiasm made such a lasting impression on us throughout the journey. His willingness to teach us about Chinese culture, traditions, and even parts of the language added so much depth and meaning to our experience. Fei’s passion for sharing his country with visitors was truly impressive and helped make the trip both educational and incredibly memorable.

Final Thoughts
China completely exceeded my expectations in so many ways. The warmth of the people, the richness of the culture, the incredible food, the history, the landscapes, and the contrast between old and new made it one of the most memorable travel experiences I have ever had.
