Cruising with Disney felt magical, but experiencing a Very Merrytime Christmas Cruise aboard the Disney Dream with our autistic son, Cooper, was truly something special. From thoughtful accommodations to unforgettable family moments, this trip exceeded every expectation we had and then some.

Planning Ahead Made All the Difference One of the biggest things that helped set Cooper up for success was being prepared with his safe foods. We brought non-perishable items and bottles of apple juice with us onboard. A big tip for other parents:
Make sure these items are in your carry-on bags, not your checked luggage, This is a requirement from Disney Cruise Line. However,
having access to familiar foods right away made embarkation day so much smoother and helped Cooper stay regulated during the transition onto the ship.

Feeling Included at Every Show and Event Because we were sailing on a Very Merrytime Christmas Cruise, there were so many festive shows and special events, our favorite being the tree lighting ceremony. We were able to sit in accessible seating areas for all the shows, which gave Cooper the space and flexibility he needed to enjoy the experience comfortably. Being able to participate without stress meant the world to us.

Dining That Felt Personal and Stress-Free Disney’s rotational dining is incredible on its own, but our dining team made it unforgettable. Our server went above and beyond by seating us at our own table, which was incredibly helpful for Cooper. Even more amazing, Our server memorized Cooper’s favorite foods and had them ready and waiting every single night when we arrived. That level of care and consistency made dinner something Cooper could look forward to and allowed us to relax and actually enjoy our meals as a family.

Fun in the Sun at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point Our day at Disney’s Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point was hands down one of the highlights of the trip. There was so much to do, and Cooper absolutely loved the ocean. Watching him enjoy the water and explore the splash areas with pure joy was a moment we’ll never forget. Splash Pads, Smiles, and Amazing Cast Members One thing we were especially grateful for was how accommodating the Cast Members were throughout the ship. Because Cooper is not potty trained, we were thrilled that he was still able to enjoy the splash pad at Nemo’s Reef.

The Cast Members were kind, understanding, and focused on making sure Cooper could safely have fun, just like every other child onboard. A Trip We’ll Treasure Forever This cruise wasn’t just a vacation, it was a reminder that traveling with an autistic child can be joyful, inclusive, and magical when you’re in the right environment.

Disney Cruise Line truly understands families, and the care they showed Cooper made us feel seen, supported, and welcomed every step of the way. We made memories we’ll cherish forever, and we already can’t wait to sail again!
